Psychotherapy is a process of exploration for purposes of change. While we are born with temperament and other inborn characteristics, much of who we are and how we function in the world we have learned through experience. In an effort to avoid pain, confusion, conflict, and other obstacles, we develop coping mechanisms and beliefs about how the world works which we rigidly cling to even when they are no longer useful. The therapeutic process is about addressing obstacles and creating pathways for change.
